Use the Battery Operational Runtime formula: $$\text{Runtime (Hours)} = \frac{\text{Battery Capacity (mAh)} \times \text{Depth of Discharge (DoD)}}{\text{Total Average Current Draw (mA)}}$$ Example Calculation: • Battery: 3S 11.1V 2200mAh LiPo • Safe Depth of Discharge (DoD) = 80% = 0.8 • Effective usable capacity = $2200 \times 0.8 = 1760\text{ mAh}$ • Total Robot Current Draw (Motors + MCU + Sensors) = 800mA $$\text{Runtime} = \frac{1760\text{ mAh}}{800\text{ mA}} = 2.2\text{ Hours} = 132\text{ Minutes}$$
Discharging a lithium battery cell below 3.0V (or beyond 80% Depth of Discharge) triggers irreversible copper shunt crystallization across the polymer separator. This damages internal chemical cell structure, permanently reduces capacity, causes dangerous cell puffing/swelling, and can cause thermal runaway fire during the subsequent recharge cycle. Always program your robot's battery monitor to sound a low-voltage alarm when cell voltage drops below 3.3V–3.5V per cell.
